The UMP is another gun that is a little bit better than its popularity would suggest. It is the second most powerful SMG, and it keeps a very respectable spread using .45 caliber ammo. The reason it is able to maintain a tight spread is because of its exceptionally slow rate of fire. This slow rate of fire, however, is also the reason why most people consider the UMP to be inferior to the MP5.

The UMP just can't fire fast enough to keep up with the H&K. You must keep your distance, and take advantage of the fact that the UMP remains accurate even after 10 rounds or so into the clip. One full clip from a UMP can be separated into two or three bursts in most cases.

The UMP has very good accuracy, but a relatively low rate of fire and a reduced clip capacity. For close combat, it is outmatched by all the other submachine gun -- its rate of fire simply cannot keep up.

While the UMP may be the best SMG for long-range battles, it's still no match for a rifle. Consider the UMP to be an inexpensive, well-rounded gun that is decent in most situations but the best in none.
